Last year the Animal Welfare Act was updated to make it a felony to engage in or promote animal fighting. That included cock fighting and dog fighting. It is also illegal to cross state lines to fight animals or to advertise fights.

However the Central Ohio-based American Game Fowl Society wants that changed. The organization has filed a suit in federal court in Columbus to legalize animal fighting saying the welfare act is unconstitutional.

“I think cock fighting should be legal. Chickens naturally want to fight each other. Dog fighting is inhumane. I think cock fighting is a good recreational hobby to do on the weekend.”
