Hopefully the worst is over, but the predawn torrents of rain that hit the county have already shut off access to several roads.

The rains that started on Thursday cranked up to full tilt around 7 this morning flooding parts of roadways.

Rock Hill schools were closed because of the rains and one motorist trying to get through heavy standing water on County Road 18 or Solida Road had to be rescued by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.

There were no injuries but additional details were not available at press time.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported at 9 a.m. the following roads closed: State Route 93 between milepost 10 and 11 in downtown Pedro and milepost 13; State Route 650 between milepost 5 and 7 in Pine Grove; State Route 141 at milepost 16 at Wilgus and between milepost 18 and 19; County Road 52, one half mile off County Road 6; County Road 7C or Hecla Road; County Road 18, a mile and a half off U.S. 52; State Route 775 between milepost 15 and 17; County Road 54; County Road 36; County Road 5; County Road 169; County Road 181; and County Road 29.

Total rain count this morning for the Tri-State ranged from 1.5 inches in Waterloo to 2.2 inches in Warnock in Greenup County, Ky., according to Ken Batty, meterologist from the National Weather Service.

“Heavy rains will be diminishing tonight,” Batty said. “We might still be left with high waters.”

The chance for rain diminishes on Saturday and the sun is expected on Sunday with a high near 70.

“Folks can get outside,” Batty said. “The yards may be wet to work in but welcome sunshine.”
