PEDRO — We tried things your way and we didn’t like it. Now we’re going to do them our way.

After trailing 20-17 at the half in the Chesapeake Lady Panthers slow-paced game, the South Point Lady Pointers changed the tempo in the second

half and raced to 56-44 win Saturday to claim the Division III sectional title.

South Point shot just 8-of-34 from the field in the first half while Rachel Harris hit three key 3-pointers that got Chesapeake at 20-17 halftime lead.

“We told them at halftime there was no miracle player or miracle defense,” said Lady Pointers coach Dave Adams.

“We told them to just play with some effort. Every loose ball in the first half Chesapeake got it. We were playing the way they wanted.”

South Point (15-6) upped its pressure in the third quarter and forced 10 turnovers. Kayla Fletcher scored six points and Tinesha Taylor hit a 10-footer as the Lady Pointers went on an 8-0 run to take the lead for good at 25-20.

A 3-pointer by Sarah Mayo got the Lady Panthers within 25-23, but layups by Fletcher, T’Ann Mayo and Ericka Leighty and a 3-pointer by Fletcher to cap the run pushed the lead to 36-23.

Harris and Mayo hit 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 40-29 at the end of the quarter.

“We tried to control the tempo and the first half we did a good job,” said Chesapeake coach Sammy Gue. “In the second half coach Adams went to a different press and took us out of our plan. They did a good job.”

The Lady Pointers led by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Fletcher scored 18 points, 14 in the second half. T’Ann Mayo had 13 points and Jalynn Bradburn 10.

Sarah Mayor scored 14, Harris 12 and Bennett 11 for Chesapeake (11-9).

South Point (15-6) will play Federal Hocking at 6:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at Waverly in the district semifinals.
