— VFW 8850 Ladies Auxiliary will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the post home. Please bring deodorant and shampoo for V.A. patients. All members’ dues for 2009 are payable at this time.

— The South Point Board of Education will meet in special session at 6:30 p.m. in the former high school cafeteria. The purpose of the meeting is to conduct regular business of the board.

— Ironton High School Class of 1948 will meet at noon at J.J.’s on U.S. 60 in Ashland, Ky. All class members are welcome.

Saturday

— Boone and Henrietta Scarberry family reunion will be at noon at the Crown City park and playground. Please bring a lawn chair.

— Ohio Championship Wrestling return to the Kentucky National Guard Armory in Ashland. Bell-time is 7:30 p.m., doors open at 6 p.m. For ticket information visit www.newocw.com.

— Chesapeake Band Boosters’ will have a community rummage sale & flea market, cruise-in car show and poker in the parking area between Chesapeake middle and high school.

Businesses and individuals are invited to “set up shop”.

The fee is $15 for one parking space and $25 for two spaces. Spaces must be reserved and paid for in advance. Tables are available for those who need them.

Concessions will be sold by the Chesapeake Band Boosters.

The proceeds will go toward the purchase of new uniforms for the Chesapeake High School Marching Band. For more information call (740) 867-3979.

— The descendants of John L. and Marjorie Hackworth will have a family reunion at the roadside shelter near the spillway at Lake Vesuvius. Devotions are at 12:30 p.m. with dinner following at 1 p.m. Please bring a covered dish and items for the auction.

— The Farm Bureau annual meeting will be 5 p.m. at Mamre Baptist Church.

—The Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade Committee will have its annual trustees’ election meeting at 7 p.m. at the VFW 8850 post home.

-Southern Ohio Schools Health Care Insurance Purchasing Consortium will have their regular meeting at 8: 30 a.m. at the Lawrence Educational Service Center, located on the third floor of the Lawrence Co. Courthouse.

– The Ironton Lions Club will meet at noon at the Ironton Giovanni’s. All members and guests are welcome.

Sept. 11

-Southern Ohio Schools Healthcare Insurance Purchasing Consortium will have its monthly meeting at 8:30 a.m. on the third floor of the Lawrence County Courthouse in Lawrence County Education Service Center.

Sept. 13

– The Flatwoods homecoming will begin with a pancake breakfast at the Advance United Methodist Church at 8 a.m., followed by a parade on Argillite Road at 11 a.m., opening ceremonies at noon at the park on Reed Street, live music at 1 p.m. along with a motorcycle, antique car and farm equipment show, children’s games and other activities. It is sponsored by the Flatwoods Lions Club.

— Trinity Assembly of God will have free guitar lessons starting Monday Sept. 8. Lessons will be 6 p.m. for children and 7 p.m. for adults and teens. Fore more information call 532-9952.

—The city of Ironton did not pick up garbage on Monday due to the Labor Day holiday. Pickup will be one day behind all week. Make-up day will be Saturday.

— Rumpke Waste Removal did not have collections service on Monday. Service will be delayed one day because of the holiday.

—The Farmer’s Market is open every Saturday 8 a.m. until produce is sold out. The market is at Second and Vernon streets in Ironton. For more information call 643-2196.

— The Chesapeake High School Marching Band is selling entertainment coupon books for the Huntington area. Books are $20 each and contain coupons from over 300 area businesses. For more information contact your favorite band member or band booster for details.

— David Willis, a 1960 graduate of Coal Grove High School, has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and is very ill. He is very appreciative of the cards he has received and would love hearing from anyone wishing to send him a card. His address is 3143 Cedar Knolls Drive, Kingwood, Texas, 77339.

— A group of senior citizens who gather in the Ironton City Center every day to play euchre would like to invite anyone interested to join. Cards are played from noon to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

— A benefit softball tournament will be at Sept. 13 for the benefit of Charles Cordle, a close relative of Rick Freeman family, to help alleviate medical expenses. The tournament will be at Dow Chemical softball field. For more information call Rick Freeman at 533-3237. Softball entry fee will be $125 per team.

— South Eastern Ohio Legal Services provides free legal services to homeowners concerned about house payments and foreclosure possibilities. The household income limit has now been doubled to make services more accessible to a greater number of Lawrence Countians. — The Ironton Lions Club meets at noon on Tuesdays at the Ironton Giovanni’s.

— The Ohio River Racing Club has launched a new website and is looking for racers. The club will be geared toward keeping radio controlled racing classes affordable as well keeping race events schedule friendly. The ORRC is planning both indoor and outdoor racing. —The Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District has recycling bins throughout the county. The bins are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Acceptable items are paper, plastic #1 (beverage bottles) and #2 (milk and juice jugs, liquid detergent bottles, trash bags, etc.), aluminum, glass and steel cans. There are also recycling containers at Lawrence County Municipal Court on County Road 1 in Chesapeake, the Perry Township Fire Department on County Road 1 in Sheridan, at Food Fair on State Route 7 in Proctorville, at Food Fair on Solida Road in South Point, at Sam’s Club in Burlington, at both stations of the Rome Township Volunteer Fire Department on State Route 7, at the Coal Grove Village Hall on Carlton-Davidson Lane and at the U.S. Forestry service office on State Route 93 in Elizabeth Township.

—The Ironton-Lawrence County Community Action Organization has begun its emergency summer cooling assistance program. Due to budget cuts, the program will only be available to people over the age of 60. Seniors may either receive an air conditioner, if they do not have one, or assistance paying the current month’s electric bill up to $100. For more information call the CAO at 532-3534.

— Those people who want to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office should call 532-3525 and scheduled an appointment. This is essential since staff is not always available to process these permits.

—The Greenup, Ky. Old Fashion Days committee is now accepting applications for craft and food vendors for the 2008 festival. Each 10×10 craft space is $80. Food vendor spaces are $400 for a 10×15 space. Anything longer than 15 ft. will be $500. Please carefully measure your trailer and include the trailer hitch in your measurements on your application. — The American Legion 433 meets at 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Ironton City Center.

— The city of Ironton’s water quality report is now available. Those who want a copy and have not gotten one by mail may pick up a copy of the report at the city center. For more information call 532-3412.

— The annual water quality report for Hecla Water Association has been mailed to all customers. Copies are available at the office on State Route 141 for any Hecla customer who does not receive one by mail. The water quality report is a requirement of the Ohio EPA.

—Country Kritters 4-H club is looking for new members. Children, kindergarten to age 18, are welcome to join. For more information (740) 646-1505.

— Woodland Cemetery Trustees meet the third Thursday of the month at 5:15 p.m., at the cemetery office.

— If you suspect your child school age child (three years old and up) has a developmental delay, support is available. Call Lawrence County Educational Service Center at (740) 532-4223. Ask for the Child Find Representative.

— The Fayette Township trustees meet on the second Saturday of the month at 7 a.m. at the Burlington Fire Station.

—Ironton City Council meets on the second and fourth Thursdays at 6 p.m. in the Ironton City Center.

—Ohio State Legal Services Association provides free representation in civil matters to people who cannot afford an attorney in Lawrence and surrounding counties. For more information call 1-800-589-5888.

— Aid Township trustees meet the last Saturday of each month at 9 a.m. at the township hall.

—The Proctorville Village Council meets at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month.

—The Ironton Cooperative Club will meet the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at Ironton Fire Department.
