SOUTH POINT — Big plays proved to be costly as South Point fell to Johnson Central in the debut for Pointers head coach Doug Shilot and the opening of Alumni Stadium Saturday night.

The Golden Eagles limited South Point to just 29 rushing yards and rolled 34-0.

The opening drives for both teams were unsuccessful.

Johnson Central could not complete a fourth down attempt.

The Pointers took over at their own 16-yard line, and converted a fourth down via a Johnson Central offsides penalty. However, on second down, senior running back Zach Woody was stripped and the Golden Eagles recovered. Woody was injured on the play, and did not return.

The Golden Eagles scored on the next play as Grim took the pitch and found Ian Welch open at the 5 for the score. Johnson Central went for two but could not convert and took a 6-0 lead with 3:04 left in the opening period.

The second quarter saw much of the same, and the Pointers held the Golden Eagles in check until a trick play on fourth down gave Johnson Central new life as quarterback J.K. Ratliff found end Nathaniel Dials on a short pass.

However, Dials then pitched the ball to Grim coming around the end, and he took it down to the Pointers’ 9. Grim would score on the next play, and Johnson Central again went for two and converted this time for a 14-0 lead with 6:29 in the half.

The Pointers were forced to punt, and on the second play of the drive; Grim took a handoff straight up the middle for a 62-yard score to give the Golden Eagles a 20-0 with 3:43 to go in the half. The 2-point conversion was no good.

“Our kids played very well, and kept him (Grim) in check for the first quarter and a half, but we had a busted play and he got through,” Shilot said. “Our kids played well and battled fatigue, and that played a factor.”

South Point was again forced to punt, but a bad snap resulted Johnson Central taking over at the Pointers 12. Two plays later, running back Nathan Dillon rumbled for a 7 yard score, and the extra point made it 27-0 at the half.

The Pointers were forced to punt on the opening possession of the second half, and Johnson Central took over at their own 5-yard line. The Golden Eagles marched down the field on an 8-play, 95-yard drive that culminated with Grim scoring his third touchdown of the game from 4 yards out. The extra point set the final score of 34-0.

Quarterback Beau Weed finished 1-2 passing with 9 yards, and had one interception on defense. Running back Tyler Smith led the Pointers with 14 yards on 6 carries.
