As their military photographs covered the wall on the third floor of the courthouse, county veterans were front and center receiving accolades for their sacrifice and acts of heroism.

On Thursday morning Hospice of Huntington hosted a 30-minute program to honor veterans at the courthouse.

“We are honoring our veterans who have served our country and allowed us to enjoy our freedom,” Charlene Farrell, president of Hospice, told the audience.

Twenty-five percent of all deaths in the United States are veterans, Farrell said.

“It is important that veterans have the end of life care they deserve,” she said. “Hospice works with the local VA and has special vet programs to meet the needs of our vets.”

Hospice now offers a variety of programs specially geared for veterans and their families and provided information about them at the reception.

At the program Hospice chaplain, MSGT Kit Jenkins, retired from Air Force, gave the invocation, followed by Commission President Les Boggs leading the group into the Pledge of Allegiance and Ironton High School varsity singers performing the National Anthem.

Also speaking was Gerard Lambert, board president of the county veterans service commission.

“We are honoring our veterans for their service,” Lambert said. “You would be hard-pressed to look at our families and not find someone who has served.”
