OAK HILL — The Coal Grove Hornets don’t mind playing defense or knocking around under the basket.

It’s that offense thing that gets them down.

Another cold shooting night led to Coal Grove’s downfall as the Hornets lost 65-37 to the Oak Hill Oaks Tuesday.

“We got the ball in the post any time we wanted, we just couldn’t put it in the basket. We’re not going to beat anyone until we start putting the ball in the basket,” Hornets coach Mike Waller said.

The Oaks (2-0) took a 12-5 lead in the first quarter behind 8 points by Garland Stiltner.

Stiltner and J.D. Hale combined for 11 points in the second quarter and the Hornets managed just 6 points as the deficit grew to 26-11.

Coal Grove (0-2) was just 3 of 24 from the field in the first half and a mere 1 of 9 around the basket in the paint.

Austin Willis had 13 points off the bench in the third quarter as Coal Grove outscore Oak Hill 15-13 and get within 39-26.

“Austin did a nice job,” Waller said.

But the Oaks converted 9 of 13 foul shots in the fourth quarter and Cory Miller had all 7 of his points as the Oaks extended their lead.

Willis led the Hornets with his 13 points. Adam Bare grabbed 7 rebounds.
