LOGAN — The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers had a plan, and they followed every curve and angle.

But the Logan Lady Chieftains messed with the blueprints.

Ironton executed its game plan and had a chance to win, but a couple of key plays at the end of regulation and in overtime enabled Logan to take a 38-36 win Monday in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League game.

“The girls did what we wanted them to do. They played hard and followed our game plan,” Ironton coach Doug Graham said. “Logan just made a couple of plays and we got a few bad breaks.”

Ironton had rallied from as many as 8 points down to take a 29-28 lead at the end of the third quarter.

A baseline jumper by Rachel Walker and a 3-pointer by Mandi Boykin pushed the lead to 34-30 with 5:34 left in the fourth quarter.

Two key foul shots by Jessica Waddle had the lead at 36-32, but a steal and layup by Carissa Bosch with 1:03 left cut the spread to 36-34.

Ironton was then called for a 10-second violation with 50 seconds left. Collette Bolen got fouled with 36 seconds to go and hit both shots to tie the game.

Ironton had two chances to win the game in the final seconds, but a 3-point attempt was long and Mercedes Crockrel was bumped as her putback attempt failed and the game went into overtime.

Logan, with its deliberate offense, chewed up clock and missed a couple of shots. Ironton was guilty of two turnovers, the second leading to a pass from Bolen to 5-11 Jessica Harris who stutter-stepped her way to a layup with 16 seconds left to make it 38-36.

Waddle hit a long 3-pointer from in front of the Ironton bench that would have given the Lady Tigers the lead with 8 seconds left, but a timeout was called before the shot.

Boykin’s layup attempt to tie the game came after the final buzzer and rolled off the rim.

The loss dropped Ironton to 13-5 overall and 10-2 in the SEOAL. The Lady Tigers need a win at Gallipolis on Wednesday to clinch the South Division championship and a berth in the SEOAL championship game Saturday at Jackson.

“It’s going to be a tough game,” Graham said. “It’s hard to win on the road in this league and it is going to be Senior Night for (Gallipolis). There will be a lot of emotion. We’ll have to play well.”

Both teams were sluggish the first half. Ironton led 6-5 at the end of the first quarter and Logan came back to take an 18-12 halftime lead.

Boykin’s 3-point play started the second half but Bosch answered with a 3-pointer. Kayla Wileman hit a baseline jumper and Michelle Pancake’s layup cut the deficit to 21-19. A 3-pointer by Boykin, a 3-point play by Waddle and a 10-footer by Boykin at the buzzer gave Ironton a 29-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Boykin finished with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Waddle had 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Logan (11-7, 9-3 North) was led by Harris with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Bolen had 12 points.
