McDERMOTT - The Fairland Dragons have the right stuff.

Fairland did all the right things necessary to win Saturday as they beat the Lucasville Valley Indians 8-1 to win the Division III district championship.

"We played pretty well. We didn't hit the ball that well and they kind of helped us along late in the game, but we had good pitching and clutch hitting and that's what it takes," said Fairland coach Roger Snyder.

"We played good defense. Cory McKnight made some nice plays at shortstop, and Michael (Hill) pitched well. It was a good team effort. Everyone made a contribution somewhere and that's what you like."

Hill provided the good pitching with a five-hitter. Hill struck out 12 and walked two as he ran his record to 7-1 on the season.

"Michael's fastball was as good as it has been. His curveball wasn't as good, but Valley's a good hitting team and they didn't hit Michael very well, so he must have had pretty good stuff overall," Snyder said.

Fairland, 21-3, will play in the regionals at 2 p.m. Friday at Chillicothe Paints Stadium.

The game was scoreless until the third inning when Fairland got three runs.

With one out, Nolan Love struck out but reached on a passed ball. He went to second on a bad pickoff attempt and scored on a hit by Todd Maynard.

Hill tripled to score Maynard and Adam Fuller's base hit scored Hill.

The Dragons went up 5-0 in the top of the fourth inning.

Chris Barnett walked and went to second on a sacrifice by Trenton Moore. An out later, Nick Zundel walked and Maynard had a run-scoring single. Zundel then came home when Hill's ground ball was booted for an error.

The Indians got their only run in the bottom of the inning.

Joey Wheeler led off with a walk and scored on a one-out double by John Gamble.

Fairland put the game out of reach with three runs in the sixth inning.

Cory Blankenship led off the inning with a walk. Zundel beat out an infield hit and Maynard bunted his way on to load the bases.

Hill singled to drive in a run, Cory McKnight singled in another run and Josh Moore squeezed home the final run.

Lucasville Valley ends the season 20-8.
