BURLINGTON - It is not very common to get something over on a teacher. At Burlington Elementary School on Monday, some co-workers and family members did just that.

A surprise luncheon was held to honor Stephanie Hill and Susan Mills who were chosen as Sam's Club and Wal Mart's "Teacher of the Year," respectively. Winners of the award are chosen by student nominations.

"They are very dedicated, special people who really deserve it," said Media Specialist Harriette Ramsey who organized the surprise luncheon.

"They should be honored for their dedication to the students, because that's what it's all about."

Lawrence County Board of Education Superintendent Harold Shafer also attended the luncheon and presented the educators with a special award for their dedication and hard work.

Kindergarten teacher Stephanie Hill was chosen Sam's Club "Teacher of the Year."

Hill said that she felt very humbled and honored to have been chosen.

"It's a privilege to represent Burlington Schools and I feel very honored that former students and parents would take the time to nominate me," Hill said.

Susan Mills, who was chosen Wal Mart's "Teacher of the Year" teaches fourth and fifth-grade science. She has taught at Burlington for 30 years.

"I was really surprised to hear that my students had nominated me," Mills said.

Burlington Elementary Principal Mark Christian said that he is very proud of the teachers and their hard work.

"We have a wonderful staff and excellent teachers," he said. "It's good for them to be recognized."

Burlington Elementary has been chosen a School of Promise for the last two years. Christian said that the schools good scores and results are because of their teachers.
