Effie McFann

Effie Mae McFann, 82, of Ironton passed away Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. The Ferguson (Wayne County), W.Va., native was born Sept. 11, 1929, the daughter of the late Lucien George and Mary Virgie Smith Gillispie. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Orville McFann, whom she married Jan. 15, 1947.

Mrs. McFann was a graduate of Decatur High School, received her bachelor of science degree from Ohio University in Athens and her master’s degree from Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. She was a former teacher for the Ironton City School District, retiring in 1991 after 32 years of teaching. She was a member of Mamre Missionary Baptist Church in Kitts Hill, and a former President of the Co-Op Club in Ironton. She loved art but her greatest passion was for teaching. She devoted her life to helping not only children but adults with their needs. She stated many times, “she never dreaded going to work and loved her life of teaching”.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Alice Ball, Narvie Gillispie, Doanie Gillispie and Clara Wilson; and five brothers, Rev. Dewey Gillispie, Ira Gillispie, Ray Gillispie, Harvey Gillispie and George Gillispie

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Thelma F. and William “Keith” Hankins of Kitts Hill; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth R. and Marilyn McFann of Racine; a brother, Hershel Gillispie of Pedro; four sisters, Hazel “Jewel” Murnahan of Ironton, Haley Howell of Long Wood, Fla., Ruth Adkins of Oak Hill and Gladys Cox of Decatur; eight grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

Funeral services was Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home with Pastor Ryan McKee officiating. Burial was in Buckhorn Cemetery. Ione Malone

Ione Avis Malone, 84, of Pedro, passed away Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, at Sunset Nursing Center in Coal Grove. The Kitts Hill native was born July 8, 1927, the daughter of the late Willard and Dove Justice Gore. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Harvey Malone, who passed away Aug. 30, 2003.

Mrs. Malone was a 1944 graduate of Kitts Hill High School and a homemaker. She was a member of Oakland Chapel Church in Kitts Hill and the Goodwill Club. She loved quilting and crafting.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Willard Gore Jr., Robert Lee Gore, John Raymond Gore, Rev. James Gore and an infant brother; and a sister, Francis Boyce.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William J. and Dorothy Malone of Pedro and Donald L. and Linda Malone of Deering; a brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Clifford and Donna Gore of Kitts Hill; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Imogene and John Scott of Springfield and Betty Joe Evans of Marion; three sisters-in-law, Eileen Gore of North Baltimore, Eva Gore of Newark and Wilma Gore of West Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Michael Joseph Malone, Scott Malone, both of Pedro, David and Carol Malone, Christopher and Louticia Malone, all of Kitts Hill; 12 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home with Rev. Clifford Gore officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Hospice of Huntington, P.O. John Curtis

John Whitey Curtis, 74, of South Point, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, at home. He was the husband of Ethel Curtis, who survives. Funeral will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hall Funeral Home. Verna Henson

William Waddell

William Waddell, 70, of South Point, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at the VA Medical Center. There will be a service at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Funeral Home.
