MINFORD - Close, but not close enough.

The St. Joseph Flyers held their own, but it wasn't enough as they fell 6-0 to the Minford Falcons in the season opener.

"We were close, but they took advantage of their baserunners and we didn't. I saw some bright spots, but we have to focus on defense on every pitch," Flyers coach Greg Bryant said.

"I was pleased. The more we play the better we'll hit."

The first four Minford runs were unearned. The Falcons also got two runs in the sixth to complete the scoring.

"We had lapses that let them score. It should have been a scoreless game going into the fifth," Bryant said.

St. Joseph had a runner on third with one out on two occasions and could not score.

The Flyers had just two hits as Kurt Jordan went 1-for-2 and Alex Swarts 1-for-3.

Jeremy Addis took the loss.

The Flyers host Rock Hill Wednesday at the Ironton Senior League field.
