CLEVELAND (AP) - Wisconsin-Milwaukee pulled off the first upset of the NCAA tournament, stunning Alabama 83-73 on Thursday in the Chicago Regional.

Joah Tucker and Ed McCants scored 21 points apiece to help 12th-seeded Milwaukee (25-5) win its first NCAA tournament game in its second try. Two years ago, the Panthers nearly knocked off Notre Dame, losing 70-69.

The Horizon League champions finished the job this time, outplaying one of the Southeastern Conference's top programs and continuing a trend of No. 12s beating No. 5s in March. That first-round matchup has produced an upset in 16 of the past 17 tournaments, the only exception being in 2000.

Kennedy Winston had 20 points for Alabama (24-8).

Milwaukee, which has won 10 straight and 18 of 19, will face Boston College in the second round Saturday.

Boston College 85, Pennsylvania 65

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jared Dudley had 18 points to lead fourth-seeded Boston College.

The Eagles (25-4) opened the season with 20 wins, then closed with a 4-4 fade that included a first-game loss to West Virginia in the Big East tournament.

Tim Begley led Penn (20-9) with 19 points.

Illinois 67,

Fairleigh Dickinson 55

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Dee Brown scored 19 points and Luther Head added 13 to lead top-seeded Illinois (33-1).

FDU's Mensah Peterson hit a long 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer that left Illinois up only 32-31, but the Illini scored 22 of the first 30 second-half points.

Gordon Klaiber scored 24 points for Fairleigh Dickinson (20-14).

Illinois will play Nevada in the second round.

Nevada 61, Texas 57

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Kevinn Pinkney scored 15 points and ninth-seeded Nevada rallied to beat eighth-seeded Texas.

Mo Charlo added 12 points for the Wolf Pack (25-6), Ramon Sessions had 11, and Nick Fazekas had 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Jason Klotz had a career-high 20 points for Texas (20-11).

Arizona 66, Utah St. 53

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Channing Frye scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half and had 10 rebounds for third-seeded Arizona.

Salim Stoudamire added 17 points for the Wildcats (28-6). Jaycee Carroll led 14th-seeded Utah State (24-8) with 18 points, going 5-for-10 from 3-point range.

Arizona will face Alabama-Birmingham in the second round.

UAB 82, LSU 68

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Marvett McDonald had 21 points and hit five 3-pointers, and 11th-seeded Alabama-Birmingham used its stingy defense to pull off another upset.

UAB (22-10) reached the round of 16 last year after beating Washington and top-seeded Kentucky. Brandon Bass, the Southeastern Conference's player of the year, led LSU (20-10) with 25 points and 12 rebounds.

Kentucky 72, Eastern Kentucky 64

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Kelenna Azubuike and Chuck Hayes each scored 16 points and second-seeded Kentucky dominated the middle to hold off state rival Eastern Kentucky.

Kentucky (26-5) extended its record for NCAA tournament victories to 94 and improved to 37-9 in NCAA tournament openers. The Wildcats will face Cincinnati in the second round. Matt Witt led the Colonels (22-9) with 21 points.

Cincinnati 76, Iowa 64

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Jason Maxiell had 22 points, nine rebounds, six blocked shots and a pair of steals for seventh-seeded Cincinnati (25-7).

With the 6-foot-7 Maxiell repeatedly swatting away shots under the basket and Iowa unable to hit from the outside, the Bearcats limited the Hawkeyes to just one field goal and three free throws in the first 11 minutes.

Jeff Horner had 12 points for Iowa (21-12).

Utah 60, UTEP 54

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Andrew Bogut had 24 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks to lead sixth-seeded Utah (25-8).

Utah, which has won 23 of its last 25 games, will face Oklahoma on Saturday.

Omar Thomas led the 11th-seeded Miners (27-8) with 24 points.

Oklahoma 84, Niagara 67

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Drew Lavender scored 17 points for third-seeded Oklahoma.

The Sooners (25-7) struggled with 46-percent shooting, but were helped out by solid defense that harassed Niagara into 16 turnovers.

Juan Mendez led the 14th-seeded Eagles (20-10) with 22 points and 15 rebounds.

Washington 88, Montana 77

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Brandon Roy had 17 points and Tre Simmons added 15 to pace top-seeded Washington, which won an NCAA tournament game for the first time since reaching the round of 16 in 1998.

The Huskies (28-5) will face Pacific in the second round.

Kamarr Davis had 24 points for Montana (18-13).

Pacific 79, Pittsburgh 71

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Christian Maraker came back after slamming his head to the floor in the first half and scored 17 points, including a late 3-pointer that helped clinch it for the eighth-seeded Tigers (27-3).

Mike Webb scored a career-high 15 points, going 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.

Carl Krauser had 27 points for Pitt (20-9).

Wake Forest 70, Chattanooga 54

CLEVELAND (AP) - Chris Paul scored 20 points in his return from a one-game suspension and second-seeded Wake Forest shook off a horrible first.

Paul added six rebounds and five assists for Forest (27-5), which will face West Virginia in the second round.

Paul was back on the floor for the first time since March 6, when he punched North Carolina State's Julius Hodge in the groin during the final regular-season game.

Chris Brown scored 14 points for Chattanooga (20-11).

West Virginia 63, Creighton 61

CLEVELAND (AP) - Tyrone Sally blocked Nate Funk's 3-point attempt, then raced downcourt for a fast-break dunk with 2.9 seconds to go, leading seventh-seeded West Virginia past Creighton.

Kevin Pittsnogle had 17 points for West Virginia (22-10), which gave coach John Beilein his 500th career victory. Funk had 23 points for Creighton (23-11).

Gonzaga 74, Winthrop 64

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Adam Morrison scored 27 points to lead third-seeded Gonzaga (26-4) past 14th-seeded Winthrop.

Gonzaga, which won its 13th in a row and snapped Winthrop's 18-game winning streak, will face Texas Tech in the second round.

J.P. Batista added 14 points for Gonzaga, and Ronny Turiaf had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Torrell Martin scored 22 points for the Eagles (27-6).

Texas Tech 78, UCLA 66

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Ronald Ross scored 28 points and sixth-seeded Texas Tech shot a season-high 62 percent.

Texas Tech (21-10) improved to 2-2 in NCAA tournament games since coach Bob Knight came to Lubbock four seasons ago. Knight is 44-23 in 27 NCAA appearances, but it was only his fourth victory in 12 tournament games since 1995.

Dijon Thompson led UCLA (17-12) with 22 points.
