Green puts clamps on long-range shooting to hold off Symmes Valley

WILLOW WOOD - The Green Bobcats found that beating the Symmes Valley Vikings was as easy as 1, 2, no 3's.

Green limited the Vikings to just one 3-point goal as they held on for a 63-58 Southern Ohio Conference win Friday night.

"The last two times out they hit eight or nine 3s, and tonight they had one so we did a good job of getting out on the floor and contesting their shots," Green coach Kevin Sheridan said.

"We did a poor job of rebounding. Overall, it's a league win and it's on the road."

While the 3's weren't there for the Vikings, Green junior guard Derek Lewis drained six shots from behind the arc and finished with 22 points. Lewis also had seven rebounds and three steals.

John Dawson had 11 points and 9 rebounds and Brian Ramey 11 points and 7 rebounds for Green (12-7, 10-3).

"Lewis got hot and we tried to double team him and he was still getting open. He made some good shots," Vikings coach Alvin Carpenter said.

Kyle Meadows had 15 points and 8 rebounds for the Vikings (10-10, 7-7). Justin Holland had 13 points and 5 assists.

Green took a 10-9 lead after the first quarter despite 7 points by Holland.

Lewis knocked down three treys in the second quarter as the lead grew to 29-19 at the half.

Alex Burnett scored all 6 of his points in the third quarter but the Bobcats extended the lead to 47-33.

With Meadows scoring 12 points, the Vikings cut the deficit to 3 points, but Lewis scored 8 points in the quarter and Dawson converted 7 of 8 foul shots over the final three minutes to seal the win.

Green converted 13 of 16 from the line in the fourth quarter.

"We had our chances at the end, but we just had some turnovers at the wrong time," Carpenter said.

Sheridan said the Bobcats played well until the fourth quarter.

"We were in control the whole night, but then we got passive in the fourth quarter and they became the aggressor. They hurt us on the offensive boards," Sheridan said.

Green played at Portsmouth Clay Saturday night.
