SANDY HOOK, Ky. — Joe Unger has been hitting well for the St. Joseph Flyers this season. Wednesday he was asked to pitch, but that didn’t cause him to forget how to hit.

Unger fashioned a six-hitter and drove in two runs as the St. Joseph Flyers beat the Elliott County Lions 12-5 Wednesday.

Unger struck out nine, walked three and only one run was earned as he went the distance. He also went 3-5 at the plate.

“He got in a rhythm about the middle of the game and then he got a little tired at the end. He hasn’t thrown a lot, but he threw pretty well today,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.

Tanner Riley went 2-4 as the Flyers collected nine hits.

Elliott County took a 2-0 lead after two innings, but the Flyers grabbed the lead for good with four runs in the third inning.

With one out, Levi Hopkins walked, went to second on a throwing error, and Payton Blair reached on an error as a run scored.

Anthony Whaley singled, stole second, and they scored on a hit by Riley. Justin Mahlmeister and Unger followed with singles to produce a run.

The lead went to 7-2 in the fourth inning.

Spencer Schwab walked and Hopkins had a sacrifice. Blair singled, stole second and Whaley grounded out as the run score.

Riley reached on an error as a run scored. Mahlmeister walked and Unger had an RBI single.

Four more runs scored in the sixth.

Elliott County got three runs in the bottom of the inning only to have the Flyers answer with a run in the seventh on a walk to Mark Boykin, two wild pitches and an error off the bat of Lane Johnson.
