CHESAPEAKE — Karlie Collins has been getting better. Tuesday she was at her best.

The Ironton junior pitcher turned in the best game of her career with a no-hitter as the Lady Fighting Tigers edged the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 2-0.

“Karlie Collins came out strong on the mound. She is gaining confidence with each game she pitches,” said Lady Tigers’ coach Missy Fields.

“We were able to capitalize and get a couple of hits together to get the runs. Chesapeake has such a strong ball club.”

Collins struck out 10 and walked four as she fashioned her masterpiece. Her efforts overshadowed a strong performance by Chesapeake’s Allison Chapman who struck out 12 and walked one.

Ironton got the only run it would really need in the second inning when Nikki Elswick doubled to the fence in left and Rebekkah Potter delivered an RBI single.

The Lady Tigers added an insurance run in the seventh inning.

Karlee McMackin singled, stole second base and scored on a two-out single by Janie Morris.

“The girls really came to play ball tonight. Our girls are working so hard to mesh as a team and the efforts are paying off,” said Fields.

Morris went 2-4 and Potter 2-3 for Ironton. Elswick and Morris had doubles.

The Lady Tigers host Jackson Wednesday while Chesapeake entertains Rock Hill.
