CHICAGO (AP) - Alex Gonzalez's infield single with the bases loaded in the ninth inning gave the Chicago Cubs a 6-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.

Sammy Sosa and Moises Alou homered for the Cubs, who pulled within one game of the NL Central-leading Cardinals.

St. Louis' Albert Pujols and Jim Edmonds connected for the second day in a row at Wrigley Field.

With one out, Gonzalez hit a slow grounder past a diving Scott Rolen that just snuck by the third baseman. Shortstop Edgar Renteria failed to field the ball cleanly and didn't attempt a throw as Corey Patterson raced home and was mobbed by teammates.

Esteban Yan came on to relieve Jeff Fassero (1-4) and struck out Sosa. Yan then intentionally walked Alou - who had four homers in his last eight at-bats - to get to Gonzalez.

Mark Remlinger (5-2), who came on in the eighth, got the win.

Red Sox 10, Yankees 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Ramiro Mendoza, not Roger Clemens, defeated his former team.

Mendoza worked out of trouble to pitch five shutout innings in his first start since June 2001, and the Boston Red Sox blew out the New York Yankees again with a 10-2 victory Saturday.

Clemens (8-6) became the second straight Yankees starter to give up eight runs against Boston's major league-leading offense.

David Ortiz homered twice for the second game in a row, and Trot Nixon hit a two-run shot in the second that put Boston ahead.

Ortiz had a solo shot in the fourth against Clemens and a two-run drive off Jason Anderson in the ninth.

Mendoza (2-3) allowed at least one runner in every inning, letting the leadoff batter reach in the second, third and fourth, but hung tough and gave up just six hits, all singles.
