One Bad Apple

One bad apple does spoil the whole bunch.

Ironton played well for most of the game but suffered yet another bad inning as the Fighting Tigers fell 5-4 to the Gallipolis Blue Devils Wednesday in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League game.

“Every game we have just one inning that kills us,” said Ironton coach Tobey Schreck.

Gallipolis got a run in the first inning when Caleb Warnimont singled, stole second base, moved up on a passed ball and scored on a ground out.

Ironton (5-2, 1-2) took a 2-1 lead in the second inning on a home run by Jonathan Williams after Josh Pancake walked.

The lead went to 3-1 in the third inning when Ethan Preston doubled and Keith Wetzel singled.

The Blue Devils got within 3-2 in the fourth inning. Kyle Dingess singled, stole second base, went to third base on a wild pitch and score on a hit by Justin Bailey.

Then came the disaster known as the fifth inning.

With two outs, Warnimont walked, stole second base and went to third on an error. Tyler Eastman stuck out but reached when the ball was dropped.

Dingess and Chuck Calvert walked and Terry Smith doubled to cap the rally.

Ironton loaded the bases in the fifth and sixth innings but failed to score.

The Fighting Tigers got a run in the seventh when Williams walked, moved up on a ground out and “Tractor” Taylor Barker singled, but the next batter grounded out to end the game.

“We had our opportunities. We wasted a good effort by Pancake. He threw well but we had too many errors,” said Schreck.

Ironton plays at Wheelersburg Thursday.
