Bottom of order keys Flyers’ romp

CROWN CITY — Bottoms up.

The bottom of the St. Joseph Flyers’ lineup did the bulk of the offensive work in a 12-3 rout of the South Gallia Rebels Wednesday.

“The five through nine batters in our order had 12 of our 14 hits. When you get that kind of production out of the bottom of the order you’re going to be successful,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.

“The seniors are stepping up. In fact, the whole lineup is producing right now.”

Joseph “The Shoe” Unger went 3-for-3, Justin Mahlmeister 4-5 and Anthony Whaley 3-4 to lead the Flyers’ 14-hit attack.

T.J. Young got the win with six innings of work. He struck out nine, walked five, gave up four hits and only two runs were earned.

The Flyers scored single runs in each of the first two innings.

Payton Blair walked, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Tanner Riley’s double in the first. Spencer Schwab singled, stole second and scored on hits by Whaley and Blair.

St. Joseph made it 4-0 in the third inning

Unger walked, stole second and came home on a hit by Mahlmeister. After a stolen base, Cody Blackburn reached on an error and Whaley had a sacrifice fly.

Two more runs scored in the fourth on walks to Riley and Unger and RBI singles by Mahlmeister and Blackburn.

After the Rebels got a run in the fourth and two in the fifth, the Flyers scored twice in the sixth.

Unger and Mahlmeister doubled for a run and Whaley had a run-scoring single.

The final four runs scored in the seventh.

Levi Hopkins was hit by a pitch, Riley walked and Unger had a two-run single. After a wild pitch, Mahlmeister delivered an RBI single.

Blackburn reached on a fielder’s choice, Schwab walked and Whaley drove home a run with a base hit.

The Flyers (2-0) plays at noon Saturday in a doubleheader at South Point.
