ZANESVILLE

-- Jeremiah Lens and Bryson Williams each had touchdown runs as Portsmouth West beat Youngstown Ursuline 13-7 in a Division IV state semifinal Friday night.

The Senators (12-2) reached their first state championship game by halting the Fighting Irish's final drive at the 13-yard line.

Lens scored on a 25-yard run in the second quarter and Williams added a 12-yard TD run early in the fourth to make it 13-0.

Ursuline (8-6) pulled within six points on Delbert Ferguson's 1-yard run with 3:30 remaining, then got the ball back at its 15-yard line with 2:09 to play after forcing Portsmouth West to punt.

The Fighting Irish moved to the Senators' 13, where the drive ended with two Daryl Clark incomplete passes into the end zone.

Ursuline committed five turnovers, including an interception in the end zone and a fumble inside the Portsmouth West 5-yard line in the second half.

Marion Pleasant 34, Amanda-Clearcreek 13

LEWIS CENTER, Ohio

-- Jake Bennett rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns and Trevor Harris threw three touchdown passes as Marion Pleasant reached its second straight Division V state title game with a 34-13 victory over Amanda-Clearcreek on Saturday night.

Pleasant (14-0), which fell to Bedford Chanel 44-27 in the 2001 championship game, won by doing something unexpected -- score.

Amanda (11-3) came in allowing only 5.5 points per game and Pleasant 6.6. But it was 28-13 Marion Pleasant at halftime.

Bennett scored on a 63-yard run, and Harris threw touchdown passes of 1 and 15 yards to Abe Sparling and 15 yards to Jason Edler.

Amanda scored on David Conley's 42-yard TD run in the first quarter and Conley's 58-yard TD pass to Jayson Marshall in the second.

Mogadore 28, Newark Catholic 21

CANTON

-- Tommy Lee scored two touchdowns as Mogadore beat Newark Catholic 28-21 Friday night to advance to its third-straight Division VI championship game.

Newark Catholic led 21-14 entering the fourth quarter but gave up two fumbles in the last five minutes that led to touchdowns.

Lee tied the game at 21 on 1-yard fourth-down touchdown run with 2:49 remaining and 18 seconds later Robert Peckering returned a fumble 37-yards for a touchdown.

Troy Nichols' 2-yard touchdown run put the Green Wave ahead 14-6 with 7 minutes left in third. But Lee answered 43-seconds later with a 6-yard touchdown run and ran in a two-point conversion to tie the game at 14 for the Wildcats (13-1).

Newark Catholic (9-5) then scored on its first play on a 70-yard touchdown pass from Doug Stevens to Jimmy Hobson with 6:02 left in the third.

Nichols also had 4-yard touchdown run in the second that put the Green Wave up 7-0 in the second.

Mogadore lost the 2001 and 2002 championship games to Maria Stein Marion Local by a combined score of 117-7.

Columbus Watterson 40, Germantown Valley View 14

DAYTON, Ohio

-- Dan DeLucia threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score, and the Columbus Watterson defense stuffed Germantown Valley View for a 40-14 victory in a Division III state semifinal Saturday night.

Watterson (9-4) recovered two fumbles and intercepted three passes while advancing to its third championship game since 1999. The Eagles lost in the Division II finals in 1999 and last season.

Cle. Benedictine 23, Akron Hoban 20

RAVENNA, Ohio

-- Joe Laffey threw for two touchdowns and Sam Koyl kicked a 22-yard field goal with 9:41 left to lead Cleveland Benedictine to a 23-20 win over Akron Hoban and a trip to the Division III title game.

Benedictine (12-2) scored each of its three touchdowns after recovering fumbles by the Knights.

Laffey made touchdowns throws to Lorenzo Hunter and Samuel Jackson on back-to-back drives to make it 14-0 in the first half.

Hoban (12-2) responded with a nine-play, 72-yard scoring drive in the third quarter capped by Tyrell Sutton's 5-yard run touchdown run to cut the lead to 14-7. Sutton finished with 140 yards on 21 carries.

Raymond Williams scored on a 25-yard run to give the Bengals a 20-7 lead. He rushed for 200 yards on 41 carries.

Sutton scored on a 17-yard run with 2:38 left in the third quarter and Tom Sitko scored less than two minutes later to tie it 20-20. Both teams missed an extra point after penalties.
