PROCTORVILLE — A missed handoff here and a spiked baton there, the little things added up big for the Fairland Dragons.

A couple of things didn’t go the Dragons way in the track season’s first meet Saturday as the Dragons were edged out by the Huntington Highlands in the Early Bird Relays.

“If we don’t make a couple of mistakes, we win the meet,” said Fairland coach Jon Buchanan. “I was pretty happy with our kids, though. We were a little undermanned and still came out and competed.”

Huntington High (W.Va.) won the meet with 90 points, just six more than the Dragons. The Ironton Fighting Tigers were third with 77 followed by River Valley with 35, Chesapeake 30, and Lincoln County 13.

Although the Dragons did drop the baton in the 4×100-meter relay, Buchanan said the Class AAA Huntington Highlanders had too much depth to overcome.

“Huntington has some really solid kids who are going to do some things at the state AAA level this year. It’s good for our kids to see that talent,” said Buchanan.

But the Fairland coach wasn’t going to concede his team’s abilities. Buchanan said the Dragons have plenty of weapons heading into the season.

“Joe Stewart ran really strong for us. Kenny Smith was solid in everything. Matt Bloomfield ran as well as we expected. He’s been a fixture on our team for awhile now. Hunter Gibson had a nice meet running the 400 legs and Chad Gibson opened the season with a pretty quick 2:05 in the 800,” said Buchanan.

Ironton’s third place finish came on the strength of distance runners Gary Monroe, Adam Stumbo, Dustin Moritz, Levi Runyon and Pierce Reeves as well as the all-around performance of Ryan Sias who cleared 13 feet in the pole vault.

“I was well pleased. We didn’t have (Jon) Monning, but we did well. Sias did a real good job for us. I thought all of our kids gave a great effort for the first time out,” said Ironton coach Greg Cronacher.

In the girls’ meet, the Lady Dragons were led by the strong performance of Megan Brooks — she cleared 10-6 in the pole vault — to win the meet with 108 points.

River Valley was second with 78 points followed by Huntington with 64, Ironton 41, Chesapeake 35 and Lincoln County had 26.

Ironton will host its girls’ invitational on Thursday while the boys’ annual meet will be Saturday.
