Village to flush fire hydrants next week

Citizens of Coal Grove may notice some discolored water and lack of pressure on Tuesday and Wednesday nights when the village flushes the fire hydrants.

Discoloration may last a couple of days but shouldn't be harmful. Kevin Markins, water superintendent, will test the water and a boil-water advisory will be issued if necessary, although Mayor Tom McKnight didn't expect it to be.

"It hasn't been a problem in the past, but I don't know if we have gone this long," he said.

The fire department and water department employees will evaluate each hydrant's condition and flush the entire system, something that hasn't been done for nearly three years, McKnight said in a Thursday council meeting.

The village spent nearly $15,000 to repair their three water wells before they could perform a complete flush, he said.

Overall, it will be a big benefit for the fire department because they will know where all the hydrants are and how much pressure they have, he said.

The Lawrence County Commission has already allocated the village $25,000 to repair the hydrants. Michael Caldwell/The Ironton Tribune
