GNADENHUTTEN -- The ride ended a little too soon.

The Fairland Senior League All-Stars run through the state tournament came to an early end Sunday when they lost 5-0 to Maumee.

"They have a good team. They have 13 players who just pound the ball. We just couldn't calm their bats down," Fairland coach Dana Jones said. "And on top of that we couldn't hit their pitcher. He has a fastball that tails on you, he has a curveball, and he drops down sidearm on you. He's going to be a dandy."

Fairland began the tournament with a 9-8 win over Elyria West on Thursday. They rallied to beat Hardscrabble 14-10 on Friday, but lost 12-5 to Maumee on Saturday morning despite 16 hits.

The District 11 champs then bounced back later in the day to knock off Athens 11-4 and reach the title series.

"That's the first Fairland team to get this far. They were down every time they went on the field and they battled back," said Jones.

"We were proud of them. They won the district 1-0 over Portsmouth and won 3-out-of-5 (at the state tournament)."
