MASON TOWNSHIP-- Lawrence County authorities are investigating a shooting that occurred in Mason Township early Monday morning.

Sheriff Tim Sexton said his deputies were called to a home at 2576 Trace Creek-Marion Ridge Road at approximately 4:34 a.m. after receiving a call that suspects had allegedly broken into the home and the homeowners had allegedly fired shots. However, Sexton said there are conflicting reports as to what actually happened.

Sexton said three people were injured in the incident. One is in critical condition and another in good condition at a Huntington, W.Va. hospital, Sexton said, and the third person was treated and released yesterday.

One automobile has been towed as evidence. A .22-caliber rifle and a .38-caliber handgun were also confiscated as evidence.

Names of those involved are not being released pending further inquiry, but Sexton said he does expect to file criminal charges in the matter.

"Our investigation is ongoing and, based on our investigation, we will refer all information (received) to the prosecutor's office for consideration of charges," Sexton said. "We are continuing to follow up in this matter." Teresa Moore/The Ironton Tribune
