POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — Coming off a state runner-up finish in the West Virginia Class AA state playoffs in 2011, the Point Pleasant Big Blacks got off to a fast start in 2012 with a 57-0 win over South Point as they spoiled the coaching debut of the Pointers’ Rick Marcello.

“We did not execute well in the first half, and we made a lot of mistakes. Against a team like Point Pleasant, you cannot have those types of mistakes. Give credit to Point Pleasant because they executed very well and exploited any mistakes we made tonight” Marcello said.

“I challenged the kids at halftime and I was happy that they kept battling through the entire game and did not quit. We understand that there are things we have to fix moving forward to next week.”

Point Pleasant got out to a 14-0 first quarter lead on touchdown runs of 18 and 2 yards by Chase Walton.

The Big Blacks extended the lead to 44-0 at halftime on touchdown runs of 27 and 6 yards by Marquez Griffin, a Teran Barnitz 32-yard run, a 72-yard pass from Aden Yates to Chase Walton and a safety against the Pointers.

Point Pleasant would extend the lead on a 36-yard run by Marquez Griffin. The extra point was blocked and the score was 50-0 after three quarters.

South Point looked to get on the board after Gage Townson found Josh Browning for a 26-yard pass hookup down to the 6-yard line.

The Pointers moved to the 1-yard line, but a South Point fumble inside the one was recovered by the Big Blacks.

Moments later Point Pleasant set the final score of 57-0 on a 93-yard run by Anthony Perry.

South Point returns home to face Grove City Christian. Originally, the Pointers were to face Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (Canada).
