SOUTH POINT – The South Point Board of Education has placed some restrictions on the superintendent.

Last night, after meeting behind closed doors in executive session for a few hours, the board passed a rule that prohibits Superintendent Fred Reeder from shuffling staff members to other departments.

Board president Terry Blake said the school district is facing declining enrollment numbers and teacher replacement is "up in the air." Because of these factors, the board wants teachers and staff to remain in their current positions until the board can get a fix on the situation.

The board also approved a measure that places penalties on administrative officials – the superintendent and principals – who violate school board policy. A five-day suspension could be levied against a member of administration who doesn’t follow the directives outlined in the school policy manual.

Blake said there is some question as to whether or not some administration members are following the board’s policy. Blake would not comment further on the situation.

Teachers and the board are also continuing contract negotiations. Teachers in the district have worked without a contract since the summer.

Blake said the negotiations are going well and he feels the board "has a good relationship with the teachers."

"Financially, we don’t know where we are," Blake said.

Since the district has went through a number of treasurers since the school year began, the board doesn’t have a good grasp on the district’s financial situation.

"Hopefully, we’ll have more information by the March 7 meeting," Blake said.
