A South Point man is facing eight years in prison if convicted on charges he severely injured his 6-month-old daughter.

Jerry Schrode, 28, of 89 Township Road 1013, was arraigned on one count of second-degree felonious assault Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court.

The charges stem from accusations that Schrode severely shook and injured his baby, who was taken by ambulance to Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va., July 29 with bleeding behind the eye and in the retina. The child was later released from the hospital. The mother was not home at the time of the incident.

Schrode pleaded not guilty through attorney Luke Styer, who was filling in for attorney Mike Davenport.

Cooper set bond at $300,000 cash or surety and scheduled a pretrial for Sept. 5.

The man accused of making threats against the management of Liebert Corp. also made a court appearance.

David Laber, 40, of 152 Township Road 606, Ironton, was arraigned on one count of third-degree making terroristic threats. Laber pleaded not guilty through his attorney, Scott Evans.

Although Evans asked that Laber’s $50,000 bond from a lower court be continued, Cooper set bond at $250,000 cash or surety and $20,000 own-recognizance. A pretrial was set for Sept. 12.

Laber, an employee at Liebert, was arrested Aug. 1 after a fellow employee told authorities the man allegedly had told her he had thought about shooting people who worked for the company, specifically naming two members of management.

According to an Ironton Police Department report, Laber asked the co-worker “if she ever thought about putting bombs in Liebert.” Laber reportedly told his coworker he would “start with the front office” and would do it “like the guy in Colorado,” referring to mass shooting in a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., July 20.

If convicted, Laber faces five years in prison.

In other cases:

• Eugene Dalton, 41, of 287 Township Road 616, South Point, was arraigned on one count of third-degree driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Dalton pleaded not guilty through his attorney, Scott Evans.

Cooper continued bond from a lower court and set a pretrial for Sept. 12.

• Sharissa Snyder, 25, of 2625 S. Fourth St., Ironton, admitted community controlled sanctions violations. Cooper sentenced Snyder to serve the remainder of her CCS commitment in prison and asked her attorney, Samantha Fields, and Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Jeff Smith to agree on how much time the woman has left to serve.

• David Ray Jordan, 56, of 187 Spruce Lane, Poca, W.Va., pleaded guilty to an amended charge of misdemeanor possession of drugs.

Cooper set sentencing for Sept. 12.

• Marcus Birchfield, 34, of 514 N. Sixth St., Ironton, was arraigned on fifth-degree theft of a laptop from Walmart and misdemeanor criminal trespass. Birchfield pleaded not guilty through his attorney, Luke Styer.

Cooper set bond at $10,000 cash or surety plus $20,000 OR and scheduled a pretrial for Sept. 5.

• Elizabeth Jones, 26, of 206 State Highway 207, Rush, Ky., pleaded guilty to fifth-degree forgery. Cooper sentenced her to six months in prison.
