PROCTORVILLE – What was a family affair became a team celebration.

Not only did Bill Dressel become the third player in his family to score 1,000 career points, but his 18 points helped lead the St. Joe Flyers to a 61-52 upset of the Fairland Dragons Tuesday.

Dressel scored his 1,000th career point when he hit a field goal with seconds left in the first quarter. He joins his father, Bill, and brother, Joe, a member of the Marshall Thundering Herd, in the elite scoring category at St. Joe.

The win also avenged an earlier 63-47 loss in which the Dragons dominated the boards with 34 rebounds.

This time St. Joe outrebounded the Dragons 38-30. Chris Laber had 11 rebounds – seven on offense – while Dressel grabbed 10.

"They killed us in the paint the last time and on the boards, so we decided to make them beat us with the outside shot," Flyers coach Adam Simpson said. "That was a big win. We needed that. We could have folded several times in the game, but we didn’t."

Besides Dressel who also had four assists, Chris Carte scored 14 points, Joe Laber had 10 points, and Danny Stack had six rebounds, five assists and two steals.

"Chris Carte had a nice game, and then Bill just shows up every night. Everyone knows they have to stop him, and he just keeps getting the job done," Simpson said.

Chris Dinwiddie had 14 points – nearly 10 points below his season’s average and four steals. Michael Hill also had 14 points while Darren Colburn got 10 points and eight rebounds. Brad Taliaferro also had eight rebounds.

After Fairland took a 13-11 first quarter lead, Dressel scored eight points the second quarter as St. Joe rallied to take a 28-20. The Flyers, who led by as many as 13 and as few as four in the quarter, hit 7-of-11 field goal attempts in the stanza while Fairland made just 1-of-10 and scored only seven points.

Fairland got within 41-34 at the end of the third quarter, but the Flyers outscored the Dragons 20-18 the final quarter to get the win. Fairland made only 6-of-25 attempts in the final period.

"It was just one of those nights. But (Flyers coach) Adam (Simpson) did a really good job. His kids played hard and smart," Fairland coach John McClung said. "We didn’t play well. We need to get back on track by Friday."

The Dragons play at Chesapeake Friday in a pivotal Ohio Valley Conference game. St. Joe hosts Coal Grove Friday.

In the reserve game, Fairland (5-6) won 59-27 as Kendall Staggs scored 12 and Kyle Dillon 10. Matt Hornbeck had 14 for the Flyers.
