PORTSMOUTH – Beating the Rock Hill Redwomen isn’t easy. It took the Portsmouth Lady Trojans overtime to do it.

After winning its first five games including a victory over Portsmouth, Rock Hill lost its first game 57-46 in overtime Thursday.

Rock Hill was its own worst enemy. The Redwomen made just 16-of-54 field goal attempts for 29.6 percent, just 2-of-15 from 3-point range, and only 8-of-16 at the line.

"Defensively we didn’t box out from the beginning and that was the difference.

It was a hard-fought game and we played hard," Rock Hill coach Amy Hughes said. "Defensively, we didn’t box out from the beginning and that was the difference."

Rachel Hartwig scored 13 points and five rebounds to lead a balanced Rock Hill attack. Courtney Doughman had 11 points and eight rebounds and Marie Bamer added 10 points and five rebounds.

Miranda Edwards had five steals and Jordan Edwards four.

Ali Hull scored 16 points to pace Portsmouth. Larika McGinnis scored 11 and Kendra Hull 10 for the Trojans.

The Redwomen play at 6 p.m. Saturday at Boyd County High School.

"We’ve got Boyd County Saturday and they’re awful good. We’re extreme underdogs. We’ll see how we bounce back. But playing good teams should make us better," said Hughes.

East 70, Green 50

FRANKLIN FURNACE – The Green Lady Bobcats started north, then someone broke their compass

Green held a lead midway through the third quarter before Portsmouth East stormed back and posted a 70-50 Southern Ohio Conference win Thursday.

"Things just went south and they hit a couple of big 3s at the end of the (third) quarter and it just carried over (into December). Those were crucial. And East rode the momentum off those," Green coach Melissa Knapp said. "We fought back to within nine, but they came right back at us."

Green used six points by Megan Tackett to take an early 17-14 lead. Heather Grooms scored seven for East.

Tackett and Grooms matched points the second quarter as each team scored nine points and Green led 26-23.

The Lady Bobcats were up by three points in the final minutes of the third quarter when Grooms drained a pair of 3-pointers and East took a 44-41 lead.

Grooms pumped n eight more points the fourth quarter as East continued to pull away.

Tackett had 24 points to lead Green. Grooms scored 29 points, Annie Clinger 15, and Sarah Oester 12 to pace East.

Green hosts Coal Grove at 1 p.m. Saturday.
