"Our defense is terrible right now," Pointers coach Mark Lafon said. "The kids know what to do. Everyone knows what he did wrong, so we can correct it. But we need to improve or this could be our last win. The only good thing I can say about this game is we won."

There were a few other good things, though. Shane Holsinger scored 34 points, Bryan Maggard pumped in 24, and Justin Eaches had a career-high 23 points to lead South Point, 1-0.

B. J. Darling scored 24 and Michael Pierce 21 to lead New Boston. Greg Mauk chipped in 10 points.

South Point jumped in front the first quarter 29-13, but New Boston exploded with 31 points the second quarter to get within 56-44 at the break.

In the fourth quarter, Maggard, Eaches, and Holsinger combined for 27 points as the Pointers rallied from a 93-84 deficit with about three minutes to play.

"They had the ball and it did not look good. But Adam Workman hustled his tail off and got a steal and we managed to find a way to win," Lafon said.

"Justin Eaches won the game for us. He had 23 points. He’s worked on his shot all summer. And the kids show tremendous guts the at the end to win it."

South Point came back to tie the game and then a technical foul allowed Holsinger to shoot four free throws which he made to propel the Pointers toward the win.
