Looks aren’t everything.

The Ironton Lady Tigers didn’t play at their best volleyball but they got past the Portsmouth Lady Trojans in five sets, 27-25, 25-18, 20-25, 24-26 and 15-7.

“It was a win. It wasn’t the prettiest, but we will take it any way we can,” said Ironton coach Beth Campbell. “All of the girls contributed something tonight.”

Ironton’s Saige Fields led all scorers with 25 points including 10 aces. Andi Kratzenberg had 13 kills, Maggie Thomas had 36 assists while Macy Wise and Lexie Washington combined for 18 blocks.

Also for Ironton, Jordan Hannan had 9 points and 12 assists with Meghan Taylor and Laken White combining for 36 digs.

In the decisive fifth match, Fields recorded seven straight aces.

“Saige served seven straight aces to start game and the girls fed from her strength,” said Campbell. “Andi Kratzenberg might have been off at the serve, but she definitely dominated at the net. Maggie Thomas had another great offensive night and Macy Wise and Lexie Washington both combined to play well at the net.”

Portsmouth was lead by Jacqueline Meriwether with 13 points and Katherine Meriwether added 9 points.

In the reserve match, Ironton won by identical 25-23 scores.

Jordan Leach had 10 points and 17 assists, Kaylinn Easterling 9 points and Desiree Scott added 5 points.

Laura Shope had 10 kills and 3 blocks, Karlie Rase 5 kills and 4 blocks, and Brooklyn Shoppe had 10 assists and 6 digs.

Ironton hosts its annual Volleyball Showcase Saturday at the middle school.

Games start at noon starting with Ironton and Coal Grove on one court and St. Joseph and Raceland on another court.

Other teams are Lewis County, Boyd County, Portsmouth Notre Dame and Paint Valley.
