Jordan Edwards had 19 points and four steals for the Redwomen. Courtney Doughman got 17 points and six rebounds, Rachel Hartwig had 16 points, eight rebounds – seven on offense – and three blocked shots, and Miranda Edwards added 10 points.

"I thought we got a lot of effort out of a lot of people," Redwomen coach Amy Hughes said. "Rachel’s work over the summer showed. Miranda and Jordan’s shooting have come along, and Courtney Doughman did a good job handling the ball and shooting the ball.

"And Julie Mootz did a good job and the girls off the bench did a nice job at key times throughout the game. Both Marie and Monica Bamer, Martha Lambert, and Laura Ferrell all played their roles well."

Rock Hill jumped out to an 18-5 first quarter lead and built a 39-11 halftime bulge as they were never challenged.

Terri Puckett had 10 points for Northwest.

"We played good team defense and we came to play," said Hughes. "The girls deserve the credit because they did a lot of the little things."

Rock Hill hosts Portsmouth Thursday.

Gallipolis 68, Chesapeake 57

GALLIPOLIS – The Chesapeake Lady Panthers came thisclose to pulling off a major upset to start the season.

Chesapeake lost 68-57 to Division II power Gallipolis 68-57 Monday in the season opener for both teams.

"Gallipolis is really, really good, but we gave them all they wanted. The second half I was as proud of them as I have been of any team. It was a heck of an effort," Panthers coach Chad Belville said.

One of the keys for Gallipolis was 18 of its 38 rebounds were on the offensive end.

"We tried to slow things down early to see how patient they would be. We wanted to keep it close the first half and then we’d be in the game the whole way. The biggest difference was their offensive rebounding," Belville said.

Chesapeake trailed just 19-15 late in the first half when Gallipolis went on a 17-2 run over the final three minutes of the half to help generate a 32-17 lead.

"We could very easily have folded out tents right there, but we hung in there," Belville said.

Chesapeake used a 15-0 run in the fourth quarter to get within 60-55, but then Gallipolis hit some clutch free throws to pull away to the win.

Lisa Perry had a solid all-around game with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Erin Sutphin had 14 points, six rebounds, 10 assists, and four steals.

Emily Delimpo had 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Chesapeake while Jennifer Rice chipped in 10 points.

Brianna Johnson scored a game-high 23 points to pace Gallipolis. Chelsea Gooth had 14 points, Meredith Addington 11, and Marissa Day added 10.

Chesapeake hosts River Valley Thursday.
