In his team’s 14-0 whipping of the Rebels, the sophomore pitched five innings of shutout baseball with nine strikeouts and just one walk. At the plate, he went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run.

"I thought Joseph Patterson threw very well," Viking coach Rusty Webb said. "We also played good defense behind him."

The Vikings would get all of the runs they would need in the first as three men scored in the inning.

Josh Robinson singled and Patterson reached on an error. Both runners moved up on a passed ball before Billy McCarty singled them home.

McCarty reached second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on a Nathan Pinkerman sacrifice fly.

In the second, Johnny Scott struck out, but reached first when the third strike got by Rebel catcher Jake Workman. A walk to Terry Elswick and a Paterson single loaded the bases and McCarty followed with another walk to force in a run.

A Pinkerman double scored Elswick and Patterson and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Michael Roth scored McCarty.

In the third, Scott singled, stole second and eventually scored on a passed ball to give the Vikings an 8-0 lead.

Symmes Valley then erupted for six runs in the fourth inning. Pinkerman and Roth both walked and an infield single by Eric Holland loaded the bases. Caleb Bland singled home Pinkerman and Roth and a Scott single and a fielder’s choice by Chad Higgins scored Holland and Bland.

Patterson put the nail in the coffin with his two-run homer.

"We hit the ball very well," Webb said. "We got production from the top to the bottom of our lineup."

With the win, the Vikings improve to 11-9 on the season. They will next play on Tuesday when they visit Portsmouth Notre Dame.
