On today’s front page, you will find a story about a local church that went beyond the call of duty to help others and make its community a better place to live.

The Coal Grove Church of the Nazarene is this year’s local winner of the USA Weekend-sponsored "Make a Difference Day." This year, more than 2.2 million Americans participated in "Make a Difference Day," which was held Oct. 28.

During "Make a Difference Day", 34 members of the church built a ramp for a disabled man, repaired a disabled woman’s home and sponsored a "Free Clothing and Refreshments" day, assisting around 150 people with lunch and clothing. Clothes that were left over were donated to charity.

The efforts of the church is a classic example of neighbors helping neighbors without asking for anything in return. These folks did what they did out of the kindness of their hearts.

Though receiving accolades for doing charitable work is fulfilling, we should not lose track of what spreading goodwill is really about. To most, offering a helping hand to those less fortunate does not require a pat on the back.

At the same time, though, we should take note of the good deeds others do and commend them accordingly. USA Weekend found the efforts of the Coal Grove Church of the Nazarene worthy of recognition and so do we.

We should all follow the example set by the church.
