CHESAPEAKE – Instead of a high school baseball game, this one was more like Home Run Derby.

The Coal Grove Hornets clubbed seven home runs Wednesday as they routed the Chesapeake Panthers 21-0 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Tyler Waller led the home run onslaught with three round-trippers and five runs batted in. Ryan Brown had a grand slam home run while Scott Lewis, Andy Dean, and Josh Wheeler also homered.

"They walked us and we made them pay," Hornets coach John Jones said. "We hit the ball well the whole game. We hit five home runs against them at home and seven today. I don’t know why we hit so many home runs when we play them."

The win also improved Coal Grove’s record to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in the OVC. The Hornets play at Fairland Friday.

"That was a good win for us. It keeps us right in the race," said Jones.

Coal Grove jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first.

Brown was hit by a pitch and Waller cranked his first home run. Jarrod Keaton then walked and Lewis homered.

The Hornets then erupted for 15 runs in the second.

Wheeler homered with one out to get the rally going. Brown walked and Waller’s second home run chased starter Zeb Best.

Jarrod Keaton and Lewis walked, and then Josh Keaton had a run-scoring double. Dean doubled in Lewis, Eric Tackett singled in a run, Timmy Harrison and Wheeler walked to forced in a run, and Brown belted his grand slam.

Waller homered for a third time, Jarrod Keaton was hit by a pitch, Josh Keaton singled, and Dean hit a two-out, three-run homer.

In the fourth, Coal Grove got a run when Dean, Wyatt Adkins and Wheeler all singled.

The final run scored in the fifth.

Jarrod Keaton singled, Brandon Stevens walked, and Tim Elliott reached on an error.

Waller went 3-for-5, Dean 3-for-4 with four RBI, Wheeler 2-for-2 and three RBI, Josh Keaton 2-for-4, and Jarrod Keaton 1-for-1.

Jarrod Keaton picked up the win as he allowed five hits, struck out four and walked one.

Ernest Bonecutter went 2-for-2 to lead the Panthers.
