The Flyers had eight hits but packaged them together to post a 6-2 win over the Rock Hill Redmen Tuesday in their season opener.

Pat Malone led the Flyers as he went 2-for-4 with a home run. Danny Stack also went 2-4.

"Pat Malone and Rusty Yaniko pitched well and the kids played well. I was proud of them," Kyle McKnight said in his St. Joe coaching debut.

Rock Hill (0-2) had five hits off Rusty Yaniko and Malone, but the Redmen managed only two runs.

"We had five hits, but not the key hit," Redmen coach Barry Litteral said. "We hit the ball. We had five line drives right at people at the wrong time. And I thought our defense played better. We were looser and more energetic. These kids don’t quit. They play hard the whole game."

David Martin was 2-for-4 to lead the Redmen offense. Nathan Litteral walked three times and scored both Rock Hill runs.

Derek Malone went the distance and took the loss for Rock Hill. Malone struck out seven and walked five.

"Derek Malone pitched a real good ball game. The home run he gave up wasn’t a bad pitch. The kid just went down and golfed it out," Litteral said. "And give St. Joe credit. Yaniko and Malone threw a good ball game and they played good defense."

St. Joe went ahead with two runs in the top of the first inning.

Kyle Johnson singled, stole second, and scored when Pat Malone reached on an error. Chris Laber then singled to score Malone.

Rock Hill got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Nathan Litteral and Kyle Lewis walked and Martin doubled.

The Flyers got a run in the third with one out. Malone singled, stole second, took third on a ground out, and came home on an error.

St. Joe scored three in the fourth to open the game up.

Johnson walked, stole second and came home when Stack singled. Pat Malone then followed with a two-run homer.

Rock Hill got a run in the fifth when Litteral hit by pitch, Lewis singled, Jeff Crabtree hit into a fielder’s choice, and Martin singled.
