Pull your walking shoes out of the closet, it’s about time to fight cancer.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life committee in Lawrence County is getting ready for the walk against cancer on May 4 and May 5 at Dawson-Bryant High School.

A kickoff breakfast was held at the Grandview Inn in South Point Friday morning to educate the public about the relay.

The relay is composed of teams that volunteer to collect at least $1,000 for the American Cancer Society.

The night of the relay, at least one member from each team walks the track at Dawson-Bryant from 7 p.m. until noon the next day.

"This year, we are looking to double the number of teams we had last year," said Linda Weingard, the project manager for the American Cancer Society.

She said 20 team packets have already went out to people interested in participating in the event.

Cancer survivors are also honored at the relay. Weingard said the survivors walk the opening lap of the relay and a reception is held in their honor. She said any cancer survivor interested in participating should contact the committee.

The relay organizers are hoping to get the community more involved with the fight against cancer. Brenda Haas, an event chairperson said, "this is a community event. People in Lawrence County can come together."
