Perry, a freshman point guard, has her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to help the Panthers beat Coal Grove 52-38 Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Chesapeake is now 9-8 on the season and clinched a second place finish in the OVC at 5-2 in the OVC.

"We didn’t have a lot of intensity the first half and we didn’t play as well. But Coal Grove is better. Dave (Owens) does a great job. They came after us," Chesapeake coach Chad Belville said.

Joining Perry was Sutphin who scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Michelle Christian had five rebounds and eight points.

Sara Patterson finished with 11 points and Stacy Easterling had 10 to lead the Lady Hornets, 5-10 and 1-5.

Kim Frye hit two straight baskets to open the game and Chesapeake began the game with a 10-4 lead.

"We worked the ball well from the start and showed great patience," Belville said.

Perry had eight points the second quarter including a pair of 3-pointers and Chesapeake was up 20-12 at the break.

The Lady Panthers came back to outscore Coal Grove 19-8 the third quarter to take a 39-20 lead as Michelle Christian had six of her points. Chesapeake’s biggest lead was 34-14.

"We got a lot of defensive pressure on the ball and that was the difference," Belville said.

Chesapeake hosts Spring Valley Saturday. The junior varsity begins at noon.
