Once the Chesapeake Lady Panthers got their press clicking, they cruised past the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 49-21 Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

"We got a lot of buckets in transition early. Our press was clicking early. We came out and established the tempo and took it from there," Panthers coach Chad Belville said. "Our defensive pressure was the big key for us."

Erin Sutphin had 10 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals to lead a balanced Chesapeake offense. Ashley Mayenchein added eight points, Michelle Elkins had nine rebounds, and Lisa Perry had five assists and three steals as Chesapeake evened its record at 6-6 overall and went to 2-1 in the OVC.

"Erin is doing a little of everything for us. She gets a lot of attention, so when she gets other people involved we’re tougher to defend," said Belville. "And when we get Elkins and Frye and Christian going to the glass, we’re a better team."

Cassie Ball had 10 points to pace Coal Grove.

Perry and Sutphin scored four each and had a pair of steals the first quarter as Chesapeake took a 12-6 lead. The Panthers held Coal Grove to two points the second quarter while Mayenchein scored six points to help build a 26-8 halftime lead.

"Lisa and Erin got us off to a good start, and Kim Frye hit a big shot that got us going. We had our usual balance that we need to win," Belville said.

Elkins got all six of her points the third quarter as Chesapeake went in front 36-16.

The Lady Panthers hosts South Point Thursday in an OVC game.
