SCIOTOVILLE – Someone find the Tin Man and borrow his oil can.

Showing signs of rust after a three-week layoff, the Symmes Valley Vikings squeaked their way past the Portsmouth East Tartans 65-59 Friday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

The win enabled the Vikings to remain unbeaten at 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the SOC.

"You could tell we haven’t played in three weeks," Vikings coach Alvin Carpenter said. "(Assistant coaches) John Sharp and Ryan Wilson gave me a couple of suggestions with our defense that helped us get going down the stretch."

Once they got loose, Justin Myers, Adam Corn, and Travis Wilson were clicking on all cylinders. Myers had 21 points and 20 rebounds, Corns scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Wilson added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Brad Carpenter had five assists and three steals and Chris Lafon had four assists and three steals.

"Travis has been in a little slump, but he came out of it today," coach Carpenter said. "We weren’t sure Corn was going to play. He banged his hand in practice (Thursday). The way he shot, we might want to bang his other hand."

The Vikings went ahead 9-4 the first quarter and then Corn scored seven points the second quarter and it was 26-21 at the half.

Corn got seven more the third quarter but East cut the deficit to 40-36.

Myers and Wilson had eight points each the fourth quarter and Wilson hit four straight free throws over the final minute to seal the win.

"The seniors came through tonight. They stepped it up for us," coach Carpenter said.

Lennon Brown scored 23 points, Jerry Jordan 13, and Aaron Watt 11 for East.
