BUFFALO, W.Va. – Brent Terry is going back home. He spent last season as the South Point Pointers head football coach, but he is returning to Spring Valley High School next season as the offensive coordinator.

Terry guided the Pointers to a 6-4 record this past season and a second place finish in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Under Terry’s offensive guidance, quarterback Jarred Smith set a school record for passing yardage and came within two touchdown passes of setting a new record in that category.

"It’s not fair to the kids to do it like that for a long period of time. They need to have someone on campus. The timing was not right for them to offer a teaching spot in my field," Terry said. "It’s unfortunate, but it’s also a good opportunity to coach at Spring Valley. It’s the best move for me and my family."

Terry was in college at the same time with Spring Valley coach Phil Ratliff who was an All-American at Marshall.

"Phil’s going to give me pretty much a free reign of the offense. I’ve known Phil for a long time and we have a lot of the same philosophies. I’m lucky to get to coach with him. I’m fairly young, so maybe another opportunity will arise. If it does, fine. If it doesn’t, fine. The important thing is I’m getting to coach and be around the kids," Terry said.

Superintendent Rick Waggoner said Terry’s resignation was accepted by the South Point Board of Education during the regular meeting Monday, Dec. 11.

"There wasn’t anything negative, but without a position in the school it made tough for Brent to be the head coach and not be around the school. We hate to see this happen because he did a really good job for us," Waggoner said.

Terry is the third coach in four years. He is the son of Spring Valley athletic director Ron Terry who coached Buffalo to a state title in 1992.

The position is expected to be posted by the first of the new year at which time applications for the job will be accepted.
