Defense sparks Lady Hornets win

WILLOW WOOD – The Coal Grove Lady Hornets were on the defensive.

A strong defensive effort led the Lady Hornets to a 56-30 win over the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings Thursday.

Symmes Valley managed to make just 10-of-46 shots for 21.7 percent.

Desiree Butler scored 13 points to lead four players in double figures for Coal Grove (3-2). Sara Patterson scored 12 while Jennifer Christian and Cassie Ball had 10 each.

Keren Bell had 11 points and nine rebounds to pace the Lady Vikings (1-6).

Coal Grove led by 12-10 after the first quarter as Butler scored seven point. Bell and Melissa Thompson scored four each for the Vikings.

Ball got six points in the second quarter as Coal Grove built a 25-16 halftime lead.

The lead grew to 40-22 after three quarters and Patterson got six points in the fourth as Coal Grove continued to pull away.

Ashland 65, Green 40

FRANKLIN FURNACE – The Ashland Lady Kittens raced to a big first half lead and never looked back in beating the Green Lady Bobcats 65-40 Thursday.

Ashland went ahead 16-4 the first quarter and was up 30-12 at the half.

"Our girls played as hard as they have all year and about as well as we can play, they’re just a real good team. It was a learning experience for us," Green coach Melissa Knapp said.

Jennifer Cline and a game-high 24 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Green. Megan Tackett added 10 points and nine assists.
