PEDRO – It took six games and five wins, but Rock Hill Redwomen head coach Amy Hughes is finally happy.

Hughes was happy with Rock Hill’s 79-65 win over the Portsmouth Lady Trojans Thursday, and she was happy the Redwomen avenged their only loss of the season. But she was even happier with the way the team played.

"It was a great team effort," said Hughes. "The scoring was well-balanced. I’m starting to see team basketball from Rock Hill and I’m liking that. Everyone is handling the ball and distributing the ball. That makes us a better team and it showed tonight."

Rock Hill, now 5-1, was led by Jordan Edwards with 26 points and five rebounds. Bobbie Clark had 16 points and 15 rebounds, and Miranda Edwards and Mandy McDonie scored 13 points each.

Shawnte Parker scored 18, Kendra Hull and Allie Hall 12, and Courtney Clifford 10 to pace Portsmouth.

The balance was evident from the start as Clark scored six, Jordan Edwards five, and McDonie and Miranda Edwards four each to give Rock Hill a 19-13 lead.

"We came out ready to play and we were balanced," said Hughes.

The Redwomen pulled away to a 37-23 halftime lead and it was 54-36 after three quarters.

Portsmouth began to foul and foul often the fourth quarter in an attempt to get back in the game. But Rock Hill thwarted the effort by converting 21-of-36 free throws. Jordan Edwards was 8-of-11 while McDonie and Miranda Edwards were 4-of-6 each.

In the reserve game, Marie Bamer had 12 points and eight rebounds and Monica Bamer had 13 points and 13 rebounds to win 48-17.
