HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Tamar Slay scored 24 points and J.R. VanHoose had 23 points and 14 rebounds as Marshall beat Division II Charleston, W.Va., 109-75 Friday night.

Five players scored in double figures for Marshall in the teams’ season opener. Travis Young added 17 points and junior college transfer Latece Williams had 16 points, nine rebounds and tied a school record with nine blocked shots. Monty Wright scored 11.

Marshall couldn’t put the game away until late in the contest.

Charleston had closed to 88-73 with eight minutes left on two free throws by Carl Edwards, but the Golden Eagles were held scoreless for the next seven minutes. Williams’ dunk opened a 19-0 run for Marshall.

Kalan Smith led Charleston with 18 points and Kyle Bixler and Edwards each added 12.
