Ironton City Council members will soon be asking city residents to help them make some decisions about the future of Ironton.

The planned round of city budget meetings will include not only a chance for residents to see exactly what goes into making the city work, but the price tags for the services they now enjoy.

Then, after everything has been explained, city council members will ask residents to take the city’s projected revenues and to balance them with the costs of providing services to the community.

And what the audience will find is the same dilemma city leaders are now facing. There simply is not enough money to go around.

That means choices.

Ironton is coming back, but the road to prosperity will be a long one. That is the reality when you have lost as many jobs as this city has over the last few years.

Until the revenue the city has lost is recouped, there are going to have to be some changes in the way the city is run. There simply isn’t enough money to maintain the current list of services.

To be part of the decision, Ironton residents must have information. These budget meetings will give them that insight, and it is important that they participate.

The future of a city is certainly at stake. Helping to find a solution is everyone’s job.
