Lady Panthers fall to Minford in OT

MINFORD — A great game deserved a great finish.

The Chesapeake Lady Panthers and Minford Lady Falcons battled to a 3-3 tie in their Division III sectional tournament championship soccer game on Saturday before Minford won 4-3 in overtime.

The loss spoiled a strong performance by the Lady Panthers’ Jackie Nelson who fashioned a hat trick.

Carrie Wynn scored the deciding goal with just two minutes left in the extra 15-minute period to give Minford the win.

Minford scored first on a goal by Megan Montavon with an assist from Kaibi Fraley.

But the Lady Panthers tied the game 10 minutes later on a goal by Nelson off a throw-in from the left from Carly Macfarland.

The Lady Falcons scored first again in the second half to go up 2-1 on a goal by Brandi Williams at the 49:00 mark. Abby Furhmann had the assist.

Chesapeake answered five minutes later when Nelson scored her second goal off a direct kick by Macfarland.

Nelson completed the hat trick with a goal at the 63-minute mark to give Chesapeake its first lead Kierra Kerns had the assist.

But Minford tied the game on a goal by Wynn with 70 minutes on the clock.

Neither team scored over the final 10 minutes to force the overtime.

Chesapeake finished the season 9-6-2 for its first winning season in the programs’ brief 3-year history.
