Although a need still remains for those that the building once served, re-purposing the Sybene Senior Citizens Center to help those in the county with development disabilities is certainly a positive move.

The Lawrence County Board of Development Disabilities will use the facility as a habilitation center to provide training on everyday activities such as cooking, arts and crafts, hobbies and general life skills.

This does not fill the void left when the Lawrence County Community Action Organization felt it had no choice but to close the center that once provided meals five days a week for senior citizens as well as a hub of fellowship and activities.

Those wounds are still open.

But this is a worthy project that is certainly a better scenario then allowing the building to sit empty.

CAO officials say the training program could one day help revive the Meals on Wheels program that closed down earlier this year.

It isn’t the perfect situation and we hope entities such as the CAO, the Lawrence County Commission, the Area Agency on Aging and others continue to work together to meet the needs of eastern Lawrence County senior citizens.

This is certainly making the best of a difficult situation.
