Franklin Furnace – The offense took the holiday off early. Fortunately for the Green Lady Bobcats, the defense was still on the job.

Although Green was unable to make its shots, the defense limited Coal Grove to just 31 points as the Lady Bobcats used a big second half and took a 57-31 win Monday.

"We didn’t shoot well. Our defense won it for us," Green coach Melissa Brown said.

The shooting wasn’t good. Green made 19-of-48 field goal attempts for only 39.6 percent.

Jennifer Cline scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Green. Courtney Moore had 16 points and four assists, and Megan Tackett had 15 points and four assists.

Green led 11-6 at the end of the first quarter, and the lead improved to 19-14 by the half.

But just when it seemed Coal Grove was in a position to pull off the upset, Green outscored the Lady Hornets 20-6 the third quarter as Moore pumped in 8 points, and with Cline scoring 8 the fourth quarter Green added seven points to its lead by the end of the quarter.

"We pressed the whole game, but our press wasn’t effective until the third quarter. That’s when we got some turnovers and some transition baskets," Brown said.

Green, 5-1, will play next Monday and Tuesday in the Lewis County (Ky.) Invitational.

WILLOW WOOD – Coach Rob Best wished his Symmes Valley Lady Vikings had waited a little longer before they got in the holiday mood.

"We were in the Christmas spirit. We were giving the ball away too many times. Turnovers really wiped us out," said Best as the Vikings turned the ball over 34 times.

Brandi Summer had 12 points and Katie Hemphil 11 to the Lady Eagles. Renee Donahue scored 11 points while Jessica Myers had 8 rebounds to lead the Vikings.

Clay led by a scant 9-8 score after the first quarter, but outscored the Browns 17-8 the second quarter.

Holly Wilson hit a pair of 3-pointers the fourth quarter to get the Vikings within 8 points, but the veteran Panthers were able to hold on for the win.

Symmes Valley, 1-5 and 0-4, plays host to Raceland, Ky., Monday, Jan. 3.

Ironton 65, Raceland 50

RACELAND, Ky. – The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers notched their first win of the season with a 65-50 rout of the Raceland Rams Saturday.

Jessica Ensor broke loose with 23 points, 12 rebounds, 10 steals, and five assists as Ironton improved to 1-4. Ensor had four 3-pointers in her total and was 7-of-10 from the foul line.

Sarah Herman scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds, and had four steals to aid the winning effort. Candace Ferguson hauled down 11 rebounds.

"We played well tonight," Ironton coach Kevin Richardson said. "We’re a young team and it’s going to take some time, but we’re getting better each time out."

Ironton jumped in front 18-4 the first quarter and it was 32-18 at the half.

The Lady Tigers put the game out of reach the third quarter by outscoring the Rams 20-7 to lead 52-25.

Other scoring for Ironton had Rachel McClellan with 7, Ashley Hannon, Rachel Wylie, and Ferguson with 6 each, and Carly Isaac added 4 points.

Ironton fell 49-35 to the Chesapeake Lady Panthers Monday.

Richardson said Ironton played well for three quaters, but then fatigue settled in.

"That was our third game in five days," Richardson said. "Our defense played great for three quarters to keep (Kati) Fuller and (Erin) Sutphin from exploding. Fuller’s a great player and Sutphin is not far behind."

Hannon did not play for Ironton. Richardson said the young freshman has a bad back and will be out indefinitely.

"The girls aren’t quitting. They’re doing everything we ask of them," Richardson said.

Ensor led Ironton with 16 points , seven rebounds, and nine steals.
