CHESAPEAKE — After Chesapeake had a few breakdowns in the first half, the Panthers broke down the South Point offense.

Tied at halftime, the Panthers held the Pointers to 11 points in the second half and beat South Point 66-43 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We had a few breakdowns in the first half and we got in a little foul trouble, but we made some adjustments in the second half and played better defensively,” said Panthers’ coach Ryan Davis.

Besides the second half shutdown, Chesapeake’s defense limited South Point to 17 of 46 shooting from the field for 36.9 percent.

Javon Thompson had a game-high 20 points and Caleb Heffner scored 16 points to lead the Panthers (3-1, 2-0).

Brandon Barnes had 18 points to pace South Point (3-2, 0-2).

Barnes scored 10 points in the first quarter as South Point took a 22-19 lead. Thompson had 7 points and Nick Duffield 5 more to keep the Panthers close.

Chesapeake tied the score at the 32-32 going into halftime and then Heffner returned to the lineup and scored 7 points in the third quarter as the Panthers outscored South Point 16-7 to take a 49-39 lead.

The Panthers used a spread offense in the fourth quarter and Thompson and Heffner combined for 12 of their 18 points. The defense limited the Pointers to just 4 points.

“We took better care of the ball in the second half and we were more patient,” said Davis.

On Tuesday, the Panthers host Gallipolis and South Point visits Portsmouth.
