If you have a little boy or girl who has a puppy or kitten on his or her Christmas list, consider heading down to one of the county’s animal shelters.

At the Lawrence County Animal Abuse and Adoption Center, there are puppies, kittens, cats and dogs of all shapes and sizes just waiting for the right new friend to come along.

Animals at the shelter have been checked by a veterinarian and are happy and healthy. For a $25 adoption fee, which is used to care for the animals and gives you a coupon for a reduced fee spay or neuter, you can take home a new friend.

In addition to the Humane Society pets, there are also plenty of dogs at the county dog pound that are desperate for new homes. Sometimes, there are even purebred dogs surrendered there who have been given up by their owners.

If you are looking for a particular breed, let the dog warden or the Humane Society know and they will keep an eye out and let you know when a stray comes through their door.

Christmas is about opening our hearts. This Christmas, if you have been thinking about a new pet, why not bring an abandoned or abused animal home? The shelter’s staff will help you pick the one that is best for your family.

Most of the animals at both shelters are diamonds in the rough – dogs or cats who just need a loving family. This holiday season, give them a chance at a new, happy life. They will reward you with undying devotion and lots of puppy (or kitty) kisses.
